European Commission announces 10-year extension for glyphosate herbicides

2023-11-16

On 16 November 2023, the European Commission announced a 10-year extension for glyphosate herbicides. Based on a comprehensive safety assessment carried out by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in conjunction with EU Member States, the European Commission extended the approval of glyphosate for a further 10 years (until December 2033), subject to certain new conditions and restrictions, such as a ban on pre-harvest use of glyphosate and the need for certain measures to protect non-target organisms . Member States are responsible for the authorisation of glyphosate-tolerant plants and may restrict their use at national and regional level if they deem it necessary to impose a ban based on the results of a risk assessment, in particular taking into account the need to protect biodiversity.
