EU Publishes New Version of Regulation on Limits of Contaminants in Food

On 5 May 2023, the European Commission published Regulation (EU) 2023/915 establishing a new version of the Regulation on Contaminant Limits in Foods, which will come into force on 25 May 2023, replacing Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006.

　　EC No 1881/2006 has been amended several times since it came into force on 1 March 2007. In order to improve the readability of the text, to avoid the use of a large number of footnotes, and to take into account the special situation of certain food products, the European Union has formulated a new version of the regulation on contaminant limits.

　　Main changes

　　(1) Abolition of the maximum limit requirement for cadmium in beer

　　Since cadmium mainly remains in grain residues and the cadmium content in beer is very low, the maximum limit requirement for cadmium in beer is cancelled in this amendment.

　　(2) Specify the specific parts of crustaceans to which the pollutant limit applies

　　The revision of the pollutant limits for crustacean aquatic products has been refined to specific parts of the limit. For example, the limit of cadmium in crustaceans is 0.5mg/kg, which is the limit of cadmium in the abdominal muscles of crustaceans, excluding the limit of the cephalothorax.

　　(3) Revision of the limits of PAHs in some products and the applicable product states

　　In view of the existing analytical data and production methods, the content of PAHs in instant/soluble coffee is negligible, therefore, the maximum limit of PAHs in instant/soluble coffee products is cancelled; in addition, the product status applicable to the maximum PAHs limit level of infant formula, formula for older infants and formula for infants and young children with special medical use is clarified, i.e., it is only applicable to ready-to-eat state products in ready-to-eat condition only.
